Why Sankofa?
The Sankofa is a mythical African bird that flies forward and looks backwards. It is a metaphor for learning from the past to inform the future.
Tom Dobell is an investor with more than three decades of extensive experience investing across UK and international equities.
Most recently, he co-founded Sankofa Investment Partners with David Williams, bringing a long-term, value-driven approach to investing in promising, but undervalued businesses.
Prior to this, Tom joined M&G in 1992. He initially ran institutional portfolios for leading pension funds, universities and charities, before taking responsibility for the flagship M&G Recovery Fund in 2000. Under his leadership, the fund grew to £8bn in assets and delivered a return of +235% versus FTSE All Share of +140% over his tenure. He was also appointed Head of UK Equities and spent 28 years with the firm.
Tom began his investment career at Phillips & Drew Fund Management in 1987 and has been a Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment since 1993.
David Williams is a highly experienced fund manager and corporate finance adviser with more than two decades of experience in value investing, restructurings and special situations.
Most recently, he co-founded Sankofa Investment Partners with Tom Dobell, bringing together deep investment expertise and extensive corporate strategy and finance experience.
Prior to this, David joined M&G in 2004, where he held a number of senior roles, including Deputy Fund Manager of the flagship M&G Recovery Fund from 2008 to 2019. He played a key role in investment decisions, corporate transactions and capital raising as the fund grew from £1 billion to a peak of £8bn in assets. He also led the launch of the M&G Global Recovery Fund, overseeing portfolio management, investment decisions and commercial strategy.
Following his departure from M&G, David founded Richmond Bridge Capital, advising businesses on transactions, refinancings and restructurings. He is also an experienced public company director.
